Greater Miami Adventist Academy 100th Anniversary
“A Century of Divine Guidance”
On May 18-19, 2012, we are planning an extra special Alumni Weekend for our 100th Anniversary. Our speakers will be Gordon L. Retzer, Retired President - Southern Union Conference and Michael F. Cauley, Florida Conference President.
We will start with a fellowship service Friday evening with speaker Gordon L. Retzer; his message will be titled "An Eternity of Grace.” Continuing Saturday morning, we will have our 100th Anniversary Sabbath Worship service with special music and our speaker Michael F. Cauley; his message will be titled "When the Past is the Key to the Way Forward."
Sunday morning at 11:00 AM we will also enjoy basketball and volleyball games where our Alumni teams will have the opportunity to challenge GMAA's Varsity teams head-on! What an opportunity to share with your classmates, staff, faculty, administration and alumni in general. Mark your calendars and join us!
Michael F. Cauley
Florida Conference President
Biographical Sketch
Mike Cauley and his wife Dottie served in pastoral ministry for 15 years in the Southern Union. They worked in team ministry and while in Cleveland, Tennessee were involved in small group and prayer ministries. In January 1993, Mike accepted a call to serve as Executive Secretary and Ministerial Director of the Pennsylvania Conference. Two years later, Mike was elected conference president in Pennsylvania. While in Pennsylvania Mike began a Doctorate in Executive Leadership which he completed in 2006. He led the conference to adopt a change process whereby they began to treat their large territory as a mission field. Church planting, treating evangelism as an on-going process, and revitalizing small churches were among the areas of focus.
In 2003, Mike was elected Florida Conference President. Over the past five years, Mike introduced a process for training coaches and developing leaders. He has a passion to see men and women grow to reach their God-given potential.
Mike and Dottie Cauley have two children B Michael who with his wife, Ashley, are planting a church in Keller, Texas and Kelly who is working on a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Loma Linda University.
Gordon L. Retzer
Retired President - Southern Union Conference
Biographical Sketch
Gordon Retzer was elected president of the Southern Union in 2003 and retired in 2012 after 43 years of service. He returned to the Southern Union after serving as president of the Lake Union Conference for three years.
Prior to going to the Lake Union he served as president of the Florida, Kansas-Nebraska, and Rocky Mountain Conferences. He has filled the role of executive secretary and ministerial director in the Rocky Mountain Conference, and Sabbath school and Personal Ministries director in the Iowa Conference. He also has been pastor in the Florida and Iowa conferences.
Before serving as president of the Florida Conference, Retzer was the manager of Adventist World Radio in Guam and then moved to the General Conference headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland, serving as president of Adventist World Radio.
His wife, Cheryl, a labor and delivery nurse, joins him in team ministry as Women’s Ministries advisor and Shepherdess director for the Union.
The Retzers have two children. Their daughter, Carisa, an elementary school teacher, and her husband, Craig Carr, pastor in Boulder, Colorado. They have two children, Cassie and Christian. The Retzer’s son, Tim, is pursuing a finance degree in Anchorage, Alaska. His wife Kyla is an epidemiologist. They have one daughter, Sydney.
Gordon was born in St. Helena, California. He graduated from Greater Miami Academy in 1964, and Southern Missionary College, in 1968 with a theology degree. He also has an M Div from Andrews University. His parents, Fernon and Dorothy, were missionaries in the Inter-American Division and moved to Colombia, South America, when Gordon was three years old. His father, Fernon, was the Sabbath school director for the Inter-American Division, the General Conference, and the Southern Union. Gordon’s father lives in the Collegedale area.
Cheryl’s father, Elder E. L. Marley, retired from Union and Conference administration and lives in Columbia, SC.
Mostly, Elder Retzer wants people to know he’s just a sinner saved by grace.
